Richard Cartmale – Musical Director and Conductor
Richard Cartmale studied Conducting, Composition, Percussion and Piano at Trinity College of Music, succesfully directing a number of performances in repertoire spanning the Baroque to Contemporary, and winning the Ricordi Prize for Orchestral Conducting. His work as assistant conductor to the Opera School led him to eventually take singing lessons himself, and he later undertook his first work as an opera singer in the Rossini Opera Festival at Pesaro, Italy before taking on a portfolio of playing, teaching and conducting work to support further studies. Subsequently he worked with English National Opera as a tenor, singing and covering many roles until 2007, when he left the company to concentrate on conducting, composing and coaching.
Although a career-long specialist in opera, he also works with choirs and orchestras for the concert hall, and has brought an operatic perspective, as Musical Director, to a large number of theatre productions. He has conducted the orchestra of English National Opera and the Bulgarian State Opera at Burgos, and more recently was Musical Director for Opera at Bearwood’s production of Verdi’s Macbeth. Having approached opera from the many angles of an orchestral player, pianist, principal singer, actor, chorus singer as well as conductor, he is uniquely placed, both to work in intricate detail with the components of performance, and to oversee the big picture that is an operatic score.
Sarah Quantrell – Principal Repetiteur
Already an accomplished solo pianist, Sarah studied for a Bachelor’s Degree in music at the University of Hull, focussing on performance with Irina Glushenkova (formerly of Moscow Conservatoire). Sarah went on to complete a Master’s Degree in music at the University of Surrey specialising in performance (with Clive Williamson) and musicology (with Dr Jeremy Barham), writing her thesis on the influence that recording technology has on performance practice. Sarah also studied choral and orchestral conducting with Russell Keable during her Master’s Degree, and now continues to study with both Russell and Richard Cartmale, with whom she also studies singing.
Sarah has performed as a soloist, accompanist (instrumental and voice), chamber musician and twice with full orchestra (Shostakovich and Weill) as a pianist, and performed in masterclasses with Yonty Solomon and Niel Immelman. She now works and performs regularly around London and the South as an opera repetiteur with Opera Foundry and Opera @ Bearwood, accompanies several local choirs and is the Associate Music Director with Mosaic Chamber Choir.
